A Pickens man was arrested here with marijuana and a handgun last week.

The man, Jarvis Javontae Cowans, 28, was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle.

Cowans was also discovered to have warrants for felony fleeing and possession of a stolen vehicle from the Jackson Police Department.

GPD Chief Barry Hale said his officers encountered Cowans on March 18 while on a routine patrol. He said an officer conducted a traffic stop on a black GMC Sonoma driven by Cowans for multiple traffic violations at about 1 a.m. at the 112 exit northbound at I-55.

According to Hale, Cowans was found to have no driver’s license and upon further investigation, Cowans was found to have marijuana and a handgun.

The officer also discovered that Cowans had a felony warrant through the Jackson Police Department.

“I’m extremely proud of the hard work the men and women of the Gluckstadt Police Department do every day and night to keep all who live in, work in, and visit our community safe,” Hale said.
